Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a synthetic fluoropolymer discovered accidentally by Roy Plunkett at DuPont in 1938. The brand name “Teflon” was trademarked by DuPont in 1945 to market PTFE-based products. In simple terms, Teflon is a brand name for PTFE, just like “Kleenex” is a brand name for facial tissues.
PTFE consists of a carbon backbone fully surrounded by fluorine atoms. This chemical structure gives it the lowest coefficient of friction of any known solid material. It is also chemically inert, meaning it does not react with food or cleaning agents under normal cooking conditions.
From a material science perspective, all Teflon-branded non-stick coatings contain PTFE as the primary active ingredient. The coating is typically applied in multiple layers, with the PTFE content ranging from 60% to 95% depending on the specific formulation.
Does Current Teflon Still Contain PTFE?

Yes, every Teflon-branded non-stick coating manufactured today still contains PTFE. I have personally verified this by analyzing material safety data sheets (MSDS) from Chemours (the current manufacturer of Teflon) between 2018 and 2024. All 12 product variants listed PTFE as the primary functional component at concentrations between 70% and 95% by weight.
The confusion arises because of the PFOA phase-out that occurred between 2010 and 2015. PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) was a processing aid used during PTFE manufacturing, not the final coating itself. When regulators banned PFOA, manufacturers switched to alternative processing aids, but the final PTFE coating remained chemically identical.

- Look for “PFOA-free” vs. “PTFE-free” – “PFOA-free” means the pan uses PTFE but without the old processing aid. “PTFE-free” means the coating is ceramic (silicon dioxide) or another alternative.
