Understanding PTFE and Its Regulatory Status

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a synthetic fluoropolymer discovered by accident in 1938 by Roy Plunkett at DuPont. It is best known by the brand name Teflon. PTFE is valued for its non-stick properties, high heat resistance, and chemical inertness. Over the past decade, confusion has grown around whether PTFE is banned due to concerns about related chemicals like PFOA and PFAS.
The short answer is: PTFE itself is not banned in the United States, the European Union, or most other major markets. However, the manufacturing process historically used a substance called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which has been heavily restricted. Testing PTFE for Safety: My 8-Year Experience

Second, check the manufacturing date. Products made after 2015 are almost certainly PFOA-free. If you are buying used cookware from before 2013, exercise caution. The PTFE itself is stable, but the manufacturing process may have used PFOA. I recommend replacing any non-stick cookware that shows significant scratches or peeling, regardless of age.
Third, consult authoritative sources. The EPA maintains a list of PFAS-free alternatives on its website. The FDA also provides guidance on food contact substances.
